The follow-up and monitoring of social networks and profiles of activists and journalists has generated controversy in Medellín. On the one hand, a group of communicators is denouncing this practice that they consider to be poorly done and, on the other hand, the mayor of Medellín Daniel Quintero, came out to deny such complaints.
Since yesterday, Saturday, several journalists have been complaining when information was revealed in which they realized that the Medellín Mayor’s Office hired the company Selecta Consulting Group to, among other tasks, perform the strategic analysis of social networks.

From there they mention, for example, to the councilor of the Democratic Center, Alfredo Ramos, and also to the former councilor Bernardo Alejandro Guerra, which according to the report make “attacks” against the municipal administration.

Even journalists such as Clara Giraldo and lawyer Roberto Uribe are classified as ‘cybermilitants’. In addition, tweets published by other journalists such as Ana Cristina Restrepo and José Guarnizo are monitored, who have also criticized or questioned Daniel Quintero, especially in the social network of Twitter.
The funny thing about these monitoring that makes us @QuinteroStreet on Twitter with public money is that it classifies criticism as “attacks”. She forgets that she is a public servant and that her actions are under public scrutiny. Not just from journalists, from everyone! pic.twitter.com/bPGeOiBwJI

Faced with these criticisms that are currently being made on social networks and the fact that the issue has also been published in other media, the mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero, responded: “With what spirit do some media try to confuse network monitoring with” tracking ” to journalists and citizens? ”. The president asked to contrast sources and not confuse public opinion.
Consulting sources and experts is a fundamental task in serious journalism. Again a story with a biased title, which confuses and misleads. Journalist who confuses Network monitoring with illegal tracking seriously misses the truth.

The mayor’s communications secretary, Juan Jose Aux, also questioned the publications that criticize the monitoring of social networks. “Very sad that without contrasting the source, it is trying to confuse people: Network monitoring and alerts are available to all serious companies and institutions in the country and the world. Serious. ”He said.
