Controversy in Egypt over Exam Question on Famous Poetry Verse

A great case of controversy arose in Egypt because of a question mentioned in the year-end exams for the second year of secondary school in Beni Suef Governorate, south of Cairo, which resulted in the referral of the author of the question for investigation, claiming that he wanted to “achieve fame and ride the trend” on social media, according to what a government official told MEE. Sky News Arabia.

The story began when second year secondary students in a number of Beni Suef educational administration schools complained about the difficulty of asking a translation in English, whose answer includes 4 choices, including the correct answer to the question.

The question was about the famous verse of the late Egyptian poet Ismail Sabri Pasha, one of the pioneers of the School of Revival Poets in modern Arabic poetry, which says: “I knocked on the door until my death… When my death died, she spoke to me.. She said to me: O Ismail, be patient, so I said: O Asma… Sabri’s family.

The author of the exam asked the students to choose the correct translation from 4 English translations that he placed for this verse.

Some students filmed this question and circulated it on social networking sites, which caused a great deal of controversy, as some saw that the question contained some difficulty from the author of the exam, while others saw that the question was easy and that the verse is very famous, and that the student must be educated. .

The educational authorities in Benisouif governorate decided to refer the teacher who set the exam to investigation, which raised other questions about what charge he will be investigated for.

Dr. Saeed Ramadan, Director of the Media Department in Beni Suef Governorate, told Sky News Arabia that:

  • Referring to the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education in the governorate regarding this incident, he confirmed that the teacher wanted “fame and riding the trend” because he knew that this question would spread on social media.
  • The exam coincided with the occurrence of a major fire in the governorate two days ago, which drew attention to it and helped spread this question.
  • There are requirements for setting questions and the education authorities found that this question violates those requirements.
  • The question was very difficult and the instructions given for the exam to be at the level of an intermediate student.
  • Not all students can even understand this verse in order to be able to translate it.

It should be noted that Ismail Sabri Pasha, the author of the aforementioned verse of poetry, joined the judiciary until he became Undersecretary of the Ministry of Haqqaniyah (currently Justice), and held the position of Attorney General from December 1895 to February 1896, and was also appointed governor of Alexandria, and he was transferred to the pension in 1907, and he died on March 21 1923.
