When the Democratic Party of Korea attempted to independently pass through the National Assembly a bill to enact a law on the treatment of people of democratic merit, the People Power Party protested, saying, “We strongly condemn the arrogant and arbitrary legislative rush by the 86 Movement and the Democratic Party, which seek to enjoy vested rights that have been lost for generations.”

At the National Assembly Political Affairs Committee on the 14th, the Democratic Party attempted to pass the Democratic Meritorious Persons Act alone. The essence of this law is to ensure that the bereaved family or family members of those who have resisted the authoritarian system, such as the democratization movement, and have been recognized for their contributions, are treated as persons of merit after review by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.

The Democratic Party is insisting on the need for the bill, saying that victims of the democracy movement who are in the blind spot of veterans should be treated with respect, while the People Power Party is opposing it, saying it is a ‘bill that produces fake activists of merit.’ On this day, when the Democratic Party passed the bill alone, the People Power Party put the brakes on the bill by referring it to the Agenda Coordination Committee, which deliberates the ruling and opposition party’s controversial bill for up to 90 days.

Political affairs committee members of the People Power Party held a press conference and said, “This law recognizes those who died or were injured during past anti-government protests, illegal strikes, sit-ins, and denial of the liberal democratic system as contributors to democracy without asking questions. He said, “It is the ‘activist preferential inheritance law’ created by the mainstream Democratic Party activists to enjoy vested rights from generation to generation.”

He said, “If this law is passed, the Namminjeon incident, which was a representative public security incident and was judged to be an anti-state organization, the Busan Dongeui University incident that took the lives of seven police officers, and the movement against the disbandment of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union will be recognized as acts of national merit,” adding, “Under the Democracy Compensation Act, “Suggesting that those who have already received 116.9 billion won in compensation be treated as national meritorious people is an act that insults and ridicules not only existing meritorious persons but also their bereaved families,” he said.

On the other hand, the Democratic Party countered, saying, “We want to give treatment to those who have passed the review of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs among those with clear social consensus.”
