Controversy at Oslo Women’s Day Debate: Israeli Women Excluded for Anti-Abuse Protest

During the “Debate” broadcast on Tuesday, the topic was Women’s Day, 8 March. There, some women had been refused participation in the marking as they wanted to mark against the abuse of Israeli women.

Among other things, they came up with a banner with “#metoo, unless you’re a jew”. It conflicted with the organiser’s support for Palestine, and disagreements erupted on Youngstorget with shouts from some people.

It has not been confirmed by the UN whether Hamas commits abuse and rape against Israelis. However, a group of UN experts have said that there is good reason to believe the reports of abuses against Israelis in connection with the Hamas attack on 7 October.

– No Zionists in our streets! shouted several people in the crowd, which is shown in a video on Fredrik Solvangs Instagram-profile.

Zhira Beck, who was behind the demonstration on behalf of Israeli women, defended the demonstration. She claimed they had clarified with the organizer that they were coming, but were met by security guards on arrival.

– They simply didn’t believe it, she said of the demonstration.

Claims they cheered during marking

The March 8 Committee by press officer Ayat Saeid believed the slogan of the women was reminiscent of the Israeli flag, in a marking that was meant to have the main focus on Palestinian women suffering during the war in Gaza.

– It is very serious anyway. It was a sum of many things that happened in a short time, said Saeid.

She alleged that some cheered when someone spoke of Palestinian casualties during the war.

– It would not occur to us to cheer when something is said about Palestinian losses, Beck replied.

– You use lies as a strategy, said Sarah Abraham, who also demonstrated on behalf of Israeli women.

– Absolutely crazy

The other side claimed that they were not willing to comply with the demands of the organizer and that is why they were asked to leave.

– I perceived it as a well-directed stunt. You had a photographer with you. In the media you made gross claims that it is about hatred of Jews. It is completely insane to connect Israeli warfare with Jew-hatred, said Stig Berntsen, who was an orderly at the event.

– It is completely ridiculous to use the debate for words against words, Beck replied.

There were several allegations from both sides about unwanted behavior and rude calls. Both sides stubbornly denied the allegations against them.
