Controversy and Confusion: Americans’ Views on Tipping in the US

The issue of tips is controversial in the US, while some people are extremely generous, others would like to be invisible so as not to give money when they receive a service. The only thing with which most Americans can agree is that they don’t like some aspect of tippingaccording to a new Bankrate survey.

According to a report from the consumer financial services company, approximately 66% of American adults have a negative view of tipping.

The Americans said that:

· They think companies should pay their employees better instead of relying so heavily on tips (41%)
· Are annoyed by tip screens previously admitted (32%)
· They feel that tipping culture has gotten out of hand (30%)
· they are confused about who and how much to tip (15%)
they would be willing to pay higher prices if tips could be eliminated (16%)

Few topics arouse as many passionate opinions as tipping.. There is so much confusion regarding who to tip and, if so, how much,” said Ted Rossman, Bankrate Senior Analyst. “A lot is changing, as technology makes it easier to tip some people and harder to tip others, as cash-strapped travelers can attest.”

Despite the inconvenience, consumers continue to tip, with 44% of Americans who eat at restaurants give at least a 20% gratuity. But when it comes to services like hairdressers, food delivery, taxis, and more, everyone approaches tipping differently. Here’s how people feel about tipping in 2023, according to Bankrate:

· 65% of people who dine in restaurants always tip their waitermaking it the service Americans are most likely to ever give.

· But that number has decreased year after year.: 73% of American adults who eat at restaurants always tipped in 2022, up from 75% in 2021 and 77% in 2019.

· Home repair workers receive tips less frequently. Top 10% of customers always tip, making it the service Americans are least likely to always tip. That is less than in 2022, when 12% of people used to do it.

· Women tip more frequently for most services. For example, 60% of women who go for haircuts always tip, compared to 46% of men.

· Baby boomers (ages 59-77) tip the most of any generation for most services, like the 70% who always tip when they go to a hairdresser; compared to 24% of Gen Z (ages 18-26); 40% of the millennial generation (27-42 years old); and 67% of Gen X (ages 43-58).

· 41% of all US adults feel they companies should pay their employees betterrather than relying on customers tipping workers.
