Controversial Judicial Amendments in Israel: Oppositon Leader Announces Failure of Settlement Attempts

The leader of the Israeli opposition, Yair Lapid, announced the failure of attempts to reach a settlement regarding the controversial judicial amendments in Israel.

“We are on our way to disaster,” Lapid said in the Knesset, Monday. “You strengthen Israel’s enemies and harm the security of the State of Israel.”

As the leader of the opposition National Unity Party, Benny Gantz, said in the Knesset, that there is “a state of turmoil in the region, and voting in favor of the unreasonable law harms the Israeli army and its security and continues to tear apart Israeli society.”

In the same context, the former Finance Minister, Knesset member Ovigdor Lieberman, said in the Knesset: “When we return to power, we will cancel all the changes and laws approved by this coalition.”

For weeks, hundreds of thousands of people have demonstrated in the streets of major Israeli cities against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal to limit the powers of judges, in a project that opponents say would undermine democracy.

Earlier Monday, Netanyahu arrived in the Knesset, ahead of a final vote on a key provision of his right-wing government’s controversial judicial reform package that has divided the country.

Television channels showed scenes showing Netanyahu entering the Knesset, hours after leaving the hospital, where he underwent surgery to implant a pacemaker.

What is the problem between the Israeli government and the judiciary?

On Monday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said that there is a basis on which to reach a compromise on the judicial amendments plan adopted by Netanyahu, but “there are still differences between the ruling coalition and the opposition parties.”

“We are in the midst of a national emergency. This timing requires taking responsibility. We are working around the clock by all means to find a solution,” Herzog said in a statement ahead of voting on the bill.

And Sunday, Netanyahu said in a video clip released by his office: “As you can see, I am fine. We will continue our efforts to complete the legislation and efforts to achieve this in agreement (with the opposition).”
