Controversial Evening Cancelled at Flèche d’or: Support for Arrested Youth Sparks Debate

The Golden Arrow finally gave up. The cultural place announced shortly before 7:30 p.m., this Wednesday, July 5, the cancellation of the evening which was to start at 8 p.m. this evening. Since the morning, the direction of the room was facing a lively controversy. Because the meeting was to come in support of the young people arrested during the urban violence which occurred after the death of Nahel in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine), by making it possible to finance their legal costs.

“We regret the double discourse of the town hall of Paris which, on Monday noon, meets in front of the Hôtel de Ville to denounce the attack suffered by an elected official, and which, on Wednesday, does not denounce an event which glorifies the rioters . This ambiguity is to encourage violence when public property has been affected, ”underlined Nelly Garnier, adviser (LR) from Paris.

Management defends its intention

The security conditions were deemed insufficient by the management of the Flèche d’or to maintain the meeting, given the tensions it aroused. An “unfair” decision, regret its members. In a press release published this Wednesday evening, they say they are “disgusted by this media recovery which diverts the gaze from the very purpose of this evening: namely the support of a popular movement after the murder of a 17-year-old teenager”.

They are also justified by the theme of the planned concert: “La Flèche d’or is attached to the ideal of justice. We believe that everyone should be able to have the means to defend themselves in court. In view of the number of arrests in recent days and the resulting activation of expeditious justice, we felt it was necessary to host this evening. »

“We will continue to be a social and supportive place”

Carine Rolland, deputy mayor of Paris in charge of culture, should receive the direction quickly, to discuss the situation, with Éric Pliez, the mayor (Paris in common) of the 20th arrondissement. The latter had judged that “in a context where appeasement is necessary, the title (of the evening) seems to us inappropriate and counterproductive”.

La Flèche d’or, managed by a collective, belongs to the City of Paris, and is partly financed by municipal funds. Thus, for Frédéric Hocquard, assistant (EELV) in charge of nightlife, going against the current of Carine Rolland and Éric Pliez, “la Flèche d’or is a hybrid, militant place, focused on political and social news. And it’s very good like that. Tonight’s evening is related to the news. That it unravels the extreme right on social networks, it does not surprise me. It is part of the public debate. “An identity that the Flèche d’or intends to keep, according to its management: “We will continue to be a social and supportive place, welcoming and organizing struggles and defending minoritized people. »
