The statement comes in the last two weeks of Donald Trump’s administration in power, and will no doubt provoke anger from China. The Chinese government sees Taiwan as an apostate provinces and is doing its best to limit the country’s influence.
Pompeo said there were “complex internal restrictions” on diplomats and officials’ contacts with Taiwan. He called those restrictions “an attempt to appease the communist regime in Beijing.”
Under Donald Trump, the United States has developed closer ties with Taiwan. For example, the US is the largest arms suppliers to the country. Last year, a US minister and secretary of state visited the island, prompting angry reactions from China.
