Consumers have never been so gloomy

Consumer confidence came in at -50 in June, which is even slightly lower than April’s -48, according to the Numbers of Statistics Netherlands (Central Bureau of Statistics).

Consumer confidence has averaged -9 over the past twenty years. In January the indicator reached the highest level ever with plus 36. The measurements started in 1986.

High inflation

Consumer confidence consists of two components: opinion about the economic situation and willingness to buy. Consumers are particularly less willing to make large purchases in June, possibly also due to high inflation. At this point, households have never been so gloomy. Households have also become more negative in their expectations for their own financial situation in the next twelve months.

Opinions on the economic environment, where inflation and the war clearly leave their mark in Ukraine, remained more or less the same on a monthly basis.
