Construction of controversial Tour Triangle in Paris started

In Paris, work has started on the Tour Triangle, a controversial 180-meter skyscraper in the shape of a pyramid. Completion is planned for 2026, French media report.

The Tour Triangle is a skyscraper in the shape of a crushed pyramid of 180 meters high. The building, in a kind of glass cocoon that makes it appear transparent, was designed by the Swiss architectural firm Herzog en Meuron, and is being built in the fifteenth arrondissement, by the Belgian construction giant Besix.

Plans for the skyscraper were already proposed in 2008, but the project was delayed for years due to legal and political obstacles. Even today there is still dissatisfaction among local residents about the tower. “The neighborhood will be in a disastrous condition for several years,” Philippe Goujoun, deputy mayor of the 15th arrondissement, told news agency AFPreferring to the many trucks driving back and forth, and the four gigantic construction cranes.

In the French capital, people are careful with high-rise buildings. The Tour Triangle will be the third tallest building in Paris: only the Eiffel Tower and Tour Montparnasse are taller. Two thirds of the building will be office space, in addition there will be a cultural center and a luxury hotel. The costs for the building, which should be completed in 2026, are estimated at 660 million euros.
