Congress rejected a motion of censure against the Minister of the Interior for repression of the UNMSM

In repression they understand each other. With 43 votes in favor, 60 against and 4 abstentions, the Plenary of Congress rejected the motion of censure against the Minister of the Interior, Vicente Romero Fernándezquestioned about the police intervention against the campus of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM).

As recalled, on January 21, hundreds of armed police officers in tanks and helicopters violently stormed the UNMSM campus and arrested 200 people who came from different regions of the country to protest against the government of Dina Boluarte in Lima. All these detained citizens were subsequently released, since no indication of having committed any crime was found.

Given this, at the initiative of the congressman Katy Ugarte (Not grouped), a motion of censure was promoted with the signature of the parliamentarians Susel Paredes (Not grouped), María Agüero (Libre Peru), Waldemar Cerrón (Libre Peru), Sigrid Bazán (Democratic Change-Together for Peru), Guillermo Bermejo (Democratic Peru), Héctor Valer (We are Peru), among other legislators.

Romero was accused of being “politically responsible for the abuse of authority and disproportionate use of force by the police.. He was also questioned for “lack of leadership and lack of suitability to lead the sector in his charge.”

In the motion of censure, reference was made to the report of the Ombudsman’s Office that questioned the police intervention in the UNMSM for not having complied with the principles of necessity, proportionality, legality and reasonableness.

Also this Tuesday, Congress refused to admit to debate the presidential vacancy motion against Dina Boluarte, charged with the death of 49 people in the midst of social protests against the Government, most of them victims of firearm projectiles.
