Confusion at the border, after a message from Mayor of Sluis: “Belgians are welcome on our terraces from Wednesday” | Knokke-Heist

Knokke-HeistCan we have a terrace next week in Sluis? It remains a question mark. “Belgians are welcome here, without quarantine obligation,” says Mayor Marga Vermue in the Dutch media. This remains unclear, since the competent minister had previously announced that Belgians are not welcome and must be quarantined. Who creates clarity?

The mayor says the words in the radio program Zeeland comes home, among other things. In the Netherlands, the terraces will open again on April 28 between 12 noon and 6 pm. A maximum of two people or one bubble may sit at the table. 10 days earlier than ours, so many Belgians dreamed of a trip just across the border. The big question was: is that possible or not. A few days ago, the Dutch Minister of Health shattered the idea by making it clear that Belgians are not welcome on their terraces.

Anyone who moves to the Netherlands should first be quarantined. Even if it concerns a short (day) trip. The latter now appears to be untrue, according to the mayor of Sluis. According to Marga Vermue, Belgians are free to come to the Dutch terraces when they open again next week. The mayor indicates that there is a government advice for foreigners to go into quarantine for the first ten days, but that this is not an obligation. The municipal council of Knokke-Heist, which borders on Sluis, has meanwhile received confirmation from Sluis that Belgians are not obliged to be quarantined there. Nevertheless, the uncertainty remains great, since the competent minister in the Netherlands has not yet officially changed his position.

New law on the way

A new law on the quarantine obligation is being prepared in the Netherlands, but it is not known if and when this law will come into effect. It is expected that it will be included in the law that the quarantine obligation does not apply to people who do not stay in the Netherlands for more than 12 hours. For the catering industry in border municipalities such as Sluis, the Flemish are an important target audience and the message from the mayor is therefore good news. Vermue emphasizes that everyone who crosses the border must adhere to the applicable corona measures.
