Concern for the Crisis in Uruguay’s Independent Theater Sector: Urgent Action Needed

Through this statement, the PIT-CNT expresses its concern for the situation of the Independent Theater and its workers.

After many years of struggle, in which our theater built culture and identity, always facing political and economic adversities, in 2019 it achieved a historic achievement with the approval of Law 19,821 on the development and promotion of the Independent Theater. This law was supported by legislators from all political sectors and is enthusiastically voted in both chambers unanimously. It remained the regulation and application of the same.

However, upon assuming the current government in 2020, the Executive Branch resolves not to apply this law and refuses to enter into a dialogue to that end, with the representative institutions of the sector.

Currently, the activity is facing a deep crisis and an emergency situation with the threat of closing theaters, jeopardizing the loss of jobs and the production itself.

Faced with the emergency, a consequence of the policies of the current government, such as the non-application of the law and the cut of 50% of parliamentary support funds, the representative organizations are asking Parliament to include it in the Budget Law that A protection fund is being studied these days to allow palliative measures to be taken so that more theater spaces do not close and to preserve all sources of work.

The PIT-CNT supports the efforts that the Uruguayan Actors Union (SUA) and the Uruguayan Federation of Independent Theaters (FUTI) have been taking before our Parliament in order to achieve this budget to support the emergency.

Likewise, we emphatically reject the non-compliance of Law 19,821 by the Executive Branch, ignoring in a state of law, the will of all legislators in the country and causing one of the most critical moments for our independent theater.
