Computer systems of 130 Dutch and some Belgian dentists hacked, chain pays ransom | Tech

Cyber criminals attacked the computer systems of dental company Colosseum Dental last week with ransomware. The files were locked by the ransomware, forcing all affiliated practices to close. The attackers demanded a ransom, which the company paid.

“Only in this way were we able to minimize the risk for all involved in such a short period of time and restore practice relatively quickly,” explains Colosseum Dental. The company does not say how much money it has transferred.

Colosseum Dental has a total of 800 dental practices in Europe, of which over 130 are in the Netherlands and some in Belgium. According to Tweakers, the company has ten locations in our country.

The dentists treat about 600,000 people annually, according to Colosseum Dental. The company apologizes and says it regrets “that this cyber attack has disrupted our duty of care for our patients so seriously.” Colosseum Dental expects dental practices to reopen during this week.

The dental chain has reported the attack to the police and has also reported the attack to the Dutch Data Protection Authority. It is required by law to report possible privacy violations to the government privacy supervisor.
