JAKARTA Common symptoms of high cholesterol can be marked by the appearance of pain in certain body parts that need to be watched out for. Therefore it is important to know whether the levels of cholesterol be within safe limits.

However, it is not as easy as it seems. Unlike most diseases, high cholesterol has no specific prominent symptoms to look out for and this is why it is known as a silent killer.

1. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

The buildup of cholesterol in the blood vessels can cause blockages which in turn cause pain. When this condition reaches the extremities, it is referred to as PAD. PAD causes discomfort in both the hands and feet and can affect activities such as walking and running.

If PAD is severe, it can even result in limb loss. A pulse test is a simple way to look for PAD and a doctor can prescribe and perform the test conveniently.

2. Atherosclerosis

This condition is characterized by the accumulation of fatty deposits in the arteries that clog them. These deposits are made of fatty substances, cellular waste products, calcium, fibrin and cholesterol. Cholesterol that builds up in the body causes pain in the hands and is a symptom to watch out for.

3. Painful Jaws

The feeling of squeezing or tightening the jaw causes discomfort and in some cases, can even cause acute jaw pain. This pain is mostly related to angina, pain arising from poor blood flow to the part of the heart that is most commonly felt in the chest but can be felt in many forms.
