Supermarket chain Colruyt wants to offer tastings in its stores again in the short term. “We want to start with wine, because we can organize that safely.”

In March last year, at the very beginning of the corona crisis, Colruyt decided to temporarily stop offering free samples. This is to minimize the risk of contamination in the store. The supermarket chain now wants to gradually start with tastings again. “We will start offering wine,” said spokesperson Eva Biltereyst. “That is easy to organize in a safe way. Customers only have to touch the bottle to pour, and then disinfect their hands well. They only take off their mouth masks to taste, and that tasting only happens in a certain zone. It is not the intention that people walk through the store with their glass and have a drink every now and then.”
Colruyt cannot yet say when exactly the tastings will be started. “But for the wine that can be quite soon. It will also happen simultaneously in all stores.” And what comes after the wine? “We don’t know yet how it will go. We will first see how smoothly the wine is going and what the reactions are.”
So we shouldn’t expect grab bins with nuts or chips right away. “That’s not an option we’re looking at right now. But I don’t think anyone can predict whether we’ll ever go all the way back to the pre-corona situation.”
