Colonel General Gennadij Zjidko: Death of a Russian Military Leader in Ukraine

That’s what the independent Russian newspaper writes Medusa.

Colonel General Gennadij Zjidko (58) is said to have been ill for a long time and reportedly died in Moscow on Wednesday this week. He was sanctioned by the West for his role in the war and is said to have received Putin’s Hero Medal in 2017.

A few months last year, at the same time as Russia suffered searing losses on the battlefield, Zjidko was the supreme leader of the Russian forces in Ukraine.

The governor of Khabarovsk Oblast, Mikhail Degtijarev, also mentions the death of Telegram.

– I was lucky to know this man, he was very attentive to the needs of each individual soldier and very committed to his service. It is these leaders who can be called commanders, writes Degtijarev.

New map abounds: – Scandalous

– Ekte patriot

He further writes that Zjidko has led Russia’s headquarters in the military operations in Syria, was commander of the troops in the eastern military district in Khabarovsk, and deputy defense minister in Russia.

The death has not been mentioned by Russian state media or authorities, and Dagbladet has not been able to verify the information.

Telegram channel Voenkor, a pro-war Russian group, describes the colonel as a true patriot. They praise Zjidko for leading operations in Ukraine despite being diagnosed with a fatal disease, and write that this was also the reason why he was dismissed last year.

Meduza writes that the Russian forces suffered heavy losses during the time they were led by Zjidko. In September, almost the entire Kharkiv region fell into Ukrainian hands, and the situation worsened for the Russian forces in Kherson.

Enraged: – May have been deliberate

Speculation about the cause of death

British The Times writes that there are several speculations on social media about whether Zjidko, who has also gone by the nickname “the butcher in Syria”, may have been poisoned.

He is the seventh top Russian military official to die since the start of the full-scale invasion, according to Russian media outlet Mediazona – which tracks military deaths.

Meduza writes that Zjidko was the supreme leader of the Russian forces in Syria before Russia launched a full-scale invasion of the neighboring country. At the end of May last year, Zjidko is said to have become supreme leader of the forces in Ukraine.

Russian BBC writes on Telegram that the colonel general was appointed as deputy defense minister in 2021.

– Led to his downfall

Despite what the BBC refers to as a career in great development, they believe that the war in Ukraine should also lead to Zjidko’s fall as a military leader.

– The war began in Ukraine, things did not work, and there were reports of the removal of military leaders who were responsible for the failures, they write and continue:

– In July 2022, Zjidko was also removed from the position, but it was not mentioned officially. (…) It is difficult to know how correct this is, but the Kremlin is not in the habit of sharing details about dismissals of military leaders.
