Colombian President calls to build an electrical network in America

Bogotá, Jan 18 (Sputnik).- Colombian President Gustavo Petro proposed on Wednesday to revitalize the Amazon rainforest with a global economic fund and contribute to the construction of an electrical network that would cross all of America as methods to overcome the current climate crisis.

«If one looks at South America, we have two great potentials in relation to climate change: the Amazon Forest, which implies a coalition of governments and a constitution of a global fund, including our contributions, because it is the third pillar of the world if we manage to revitalize Jungle. Second, our ability to generate clean energy through an electrical network, “said the president before the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Petro reiterated the importance of the energy transition and the change in the extractivist model in Latin America, as an engine for saving the global environment.

According to the Colombian president, this electrical network could sell clean energy to the United States and the rest of the world.

“If we build an electrical network we could sell our potential to help the United States change its energy matrix, which is the first element to overcome the climate crisis, if the United States does not change, nothing to do,” he said.

For this, he assured that, in addition to the network that unites America, it is also possible to create a maritime network that connects the continent with Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania.

“Clean energy sources demand minerals from us and we could sell them raw or start industrialization processes, such as making our own turbias to generate that energy that could go by cable or sea, like hydrogen, to the rest of the world,” he said. Petro.

Finally, he assured that world powers and multilateral organizations should support this type of initiative through direct investment in projects. (Sputnik)
