Coca-Cola suspends its ads on social networks in anti-racist campaign | racism | Business

Coca-Cola, which invests huge amounts of money in ads, announced that it was going to suspend its social media ads for at least 30 days, as part of a campaign against racism on those platforms.

“There is no place for racism in the world and there is no place for racism on social media,” said James Quincey, the executive director of the global giant, in a brief statement.

Quincey demanded that social media show greater “transparency and accountability” after other brands decided to withdraw their ads from them to force them to delete more content that incites hatred.

Coca Cola He will take advantage of that period to “take stock of his advertising strategies and see if he needs to review them,” said the executive director.

The American soft drink giant told CNBC that this “rest” does not mean that it joins the movement launched last week by associations for the defense of African-Americans and civil society.

That campaign, called #StopHateForProfit (“Stop Hate for Profits”), proposes to boycott Facebook ads in July and is supported by various anti-racist organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Jewish Anti-Defamation League.

Its objective is to achieve better regulation of groups that incite hatred, racism and violence on social networks.

This Friday, Unilever, one of the world leaders in the agri-food and cosmetics sector, announced the suspension of its ads on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in the United States at least until the end of the year, due to this “polarized” electoral period in U.S.

Under pressure, Facebook tightened its content-restraint policies by banning more types of hate messages in commercials and starting to place warnings on problematic posts it chooses not to delete.
