For the first time in many months, the Berlin coalition leaders will meet again on Wednesday evening. Above all, the SPD wants to enforce a central demand.

Berlin – Immediately before the coalition summit in Berlin on Wednesday evening, the SPD insists that the top of the CDU and CSU should contribute a corona-related one-off payment to Hartz IV recipients. “We finally need a subsidy for basic security in an amount that immediately noticeably relieves the recipient,” said party leader Saskia Esken of our newspaper, “and I expect the coalition partner to clear the way for it today.” The room has amounts between 100 and 200 euros, which should offset at least part of the additional costs caused by the pandemic.

“Anyone who is dependent on basic security in the current situation has been going through a particularly difficult time for months,” said Esken in support of her request, which she had already made over the weekend: “The already narrow budget is extremely burdened by additional expenses.”
Masks or disinfectants would have to be paid for, while at the same time support from social institutions such as boards or free meals in daycare centers or schools would largely be eliminated. “The provision of medical masks must be made possible quickly,” said Esken of the ongoing discussion about free material, “but that alone is not enough to help people in financial need.”
The so-called coalition committee will meet again this Wednesday evening for the first time since the end of August. For the new CDU chairman Armin Laschet it is a first.
