CM – Report: Patrick Reed in Houston Hospital battling pneumonia

Patrick Reed is in a Houston-area hospital struggling with pneumonia, according to a statement from Reed posted on Twitter by Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis.

In Reed’s statement, he said, “I was in the hospital with bilateral pneumonia. I’m on the road to recovery and once cleared by the doctors I can’t wait to go back.

Reed pulled out of the Northern Trust on the morning of the first round last Thursday, citing an ankle injury. In his statement on Monday, Reed said that “the good news is my ankle is fine.”

According to Lewis, Reed will not play this week’s BMW Championship in Baltimore. Reed was 22nd in the FedEx Cup points standings ahead of the playoffs and is set to drop to 26th, so he still has a chance to qualify for the Tour Championship in Atlanta, which begins on September 2.

Reed’s health could have an impact on his Ryder Cup. The top six in the Ryder Cup points standings automatically qualify after the BMW. If Reed, who entered Week 9 on points, does not play, he will have to rely on one of captain Steve Stricker’s six picks, which will be made after the Tour Championship. Reed has played for the US side in the past three biennial competitions.

Stacy Lewis will not be on the squad, but instead will be Pat Hurst’s assistant captain.

Catriona Matthew’s six captain’s picks include Ireland’s first and Finland’s first.

Pampling shot a 66 in the final round, then waited over an hour for his pursuers to enter.

The Tour hopes to finish the Northern Trust on Monday and has a plan if the weather steps in.
