Closure of La Mur: Saying Goodbye to Graz’s Favorite French Meeting Point

The Schloßbergplatz was there for almost five years the Meeting point for all Francophiles in Graz: In “La Mur” in the Reinerhof, the oldest house in Graz, Michael Pendl and Gerald Hafner celebrated French savoir-vivre – with French wines, Crémant and the self-created “Spritz Escalier” (“Stiegenspritzer”) ), plus French food and themed evenings. Even the Eiffel Tower was brought to the clock tower – at least as a decorative object for the delightful guest garden.

Now the “La Mur” operators are saying goodbye: This week they will be open as usual from Thursday to Saturday, and will be open for the last time on Tuesday, January 30th and Wednesday, January 31st. By the way, it will be closed trotz of success after surviving difficult times with Corona and inflation well: Pendl and Hafner had worked part-time at the ORF and in the Education Directorate and Ministry until recently and have no plans to give that up either or had to return to full-time mode . “We did everything with joy and love, but now we had to make a decision,” is how they explain the step: “We practice our main jobs with just as much heart, commitment and enthusiasm.”

They are proud to have managed the restaurant very well even without any experience in the catering industry, also thanks to a great team, which included Pendl’s sister Sabine as a cook and important support. The decision was anything but easy and the last few days have been very emotional, says Pendl: After the closure was announced on Wednesday evening, countless messages and calls came in. Over time, friendships have developed in the restaurant that they definitely want to maintain.

As far as cuisine française is concerned, a gap is now opening up again in Graz – after many restaurants such as Brasserie Santner, Das Bistro, Ma France, Bruno and of course Las Pastis have come and gone in recent years. A small piece of France should of course be preserved in Graz: As President of the Société France-Autriche de Graz, Hafner will ensure that events such as La Fête de la Musique will continue to take place.
