Under the motto “Protest at a snail’s pace: protect health!” climate stickers marched on the Ringstrasse in Vienna on Wednesday morning. This is intended to “slow down” the morning traffic, according to a broadcast.
With this, the activists of the “last generation” underpinned their demand for compliance with climate targets, 100 km/h on motorways and the ban on new oil and gas drilling.
According to the police, the protest march was moving in the direction of travel, around 8.30 a.m. it was in the area of the Burgring or Opernring. At 9 a.m., the protesters moved to the Universitätsring near the Burgtheater. Public transport was not affected by the protest march, but some local councilors who wanted to go to town hall were.
The FPÖ, for example, criticized the fact that a meeting on climate policy was not held because of the protest march. “It’s absurd that the climate chaos with their sticking action on the Vienna Ring is making sure that numerous local councils are late for the environmental and climate protection debate in today’s meeting of the Vienna City Council,” said FPÖ environmental spokesman Udo Guggenbichler.
The deputies did not have to wait long after all. The rally, which consisted of about 20 activists, was stopped and broken up at Josef-Meinrad-Platz. Six people did not comply, sat down on the road and were carried away.
This time, the activists also received support from the Vienna Medical Association, which showed solidarity with the goals of the climate movement in a resolution. “The climate activists remind us as a population, just like the federal government, in a possibly ‘disturbing’ but always peaceful and non-violent way to comply with and implement the self-imposed and absolutely necessary climate goals,” the resolution says.
As doctors, one recognizes the corresponding health policy responsibility in climate protection. It is the task of the medical profession to protect human life, and this requires serious climate protection measures. “We have no time to lose,” was the urgent appeal from the medical association.
