Classification into diabetes subtypes important for more coherent therapy

Berlin The lack of classification of type 2 diabetes into subtypes can lead to over- and undersupply of those affected. This is reported by the German Diabetes Association (DDG). According to the scientific association, new study data show that a division of type 2 diabetes into five subtypes makes sense.

These findings can significantly improve diabetes treatment, explained Andreas Fritsche, one of the spokesmen for the Commission for Epidemiology and Health Services Research at the DDG.

It was important that the subtypes had different risks, particularly with regard to diabetic nephropathy, non-alcoholic fatty liver and diabetic neuropathy. These different risks result in new therapeutic approaches with appropriate preventive measures.

If you know which subtype a patient belongs to, you should be able to treat him much more effectively and thus avoid complications, says Fritsche. For this, a routine determination of endogenous insulin secretion is probably sufficient, for which one only needs a blood draw in the fasting state, according to the deputy head of the Institute for Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases of the Helmholtz Center Munich at the University of Tbingen.

Patients with lower-risk, age-related diabetes could also benefit from these findings. The studies show that about a third of diabetes patients are affected by this type, according to Fritsche.

However, the society points out that prospective studies are necessary before the subtypes are included in diabetes care.

Wolfgang Rathmann of the German Diabetes Center in Dsseldorf, also spokesman for the Commission for Epidemiology and Health Services Research, demanded that these studies examine the differentiated therapy strategies in the different subgroups. ©hil / aerzteblatt.de
