Civil Protection corrected information on orange alert in Braga district

A user from the Asilo de São José home in Braga died this Wednesday, infected with the new coronavirus, which causes Covid-19, hospital, home and family sources told O MINHO. According to known information, this is the third user of a home in Braga who dies from the new disease, after two deaths in the Resisénior home.

Hannelor Fischer Cruz, 78, a professor of Austrian origin well known in civil society in Braga, did not resist the symptoms caused by the infection, eventually dying at Braga Hospital during the early hours of Wednesday.

The music teacher started to feel the first symptoms last Monday of the other week, but only on Saturday she was transported to the hospital emergency room, due to suspicion of the new virus.

Miguel Fischer Cruz, grandson of the deceased, is disgusted by the delay in the services of that institution for the elderly to call INEM services, since, according to him, the latter had had symptoms and complaints for three days before being admitted.

There was already an infected user, but the home says he got it in the hospital

It is recalled that there is a user of that home admitted to the Hospital de Braga for more than a week, because, allegedly, he contracted the infection outside the institution, or at least so ensure those responsible, pointing out that the virus should have been contracted during hemodialysis treatments performed at the hospital in Braga.

To O MINHO, the relative admits that it is not known if the death would still occur if the grandmother were transported as early as Thursday, but accuses the home of “negligence” for ignoring the alerts of the user and the grandson himself.

“She started telling me that she felt bad on the 16th and I contacted the home’s medical services, but I was told that there was no reason to be alarmed and that all the elderly people have been in isolation since the 6th of March, since the government banned visits to these institutions ”, he says. The last time Hannelore left home was on March 5th, to go to a hairdresser.

The symptoms started with fever and a dry cough. The following day, Tuesday, the fever remained and started with breathing difficulties, the same occurring on Wednesday.

“On Thursday she called me in desperation, as she had never done before, asking me to call the nurses because she was sure I had the virus”, says the grandson.

Miguel will have called home immediately, but, according to him, they would have said that “the antibiotic for fever had not yet had any effect”, something that worried the grandson because he knew that, if it were Covid, that medicine would not work.

Emergency admission to the ward infected with Covid-19

On Saturday, Miguel received a contact from the home, informing him that his grandmother was going to be sent to Braga Hospital via INEM and that they would try to do “the best possible”. The screening test had not yet been done, but the medical team said there was a strong likelihood that she contracted Covid-19.

“Still on Saturday, they immediately put my grandmother in the infected unit, although the household says that she had not been positive,” says Miguel.

At Braga Hospital, a nurse said that the levels of toxicity in Hannelore’s body were “above normal”, so she should have been hospitalized previously.

From then on, Miguel never heard anything from his grandmother until this Wednesday, when he was called from the hospital to say he had died, infected with the new coronavirus.

He had no health problems, says the grandson

“My grandmother was in good health, she had no breathing problems, she had some heartburn problems in her stomach, she only took protective covers. He performed analyzes every two months and everything was always fine ”, says the grandson.

“Now I can’t do a funeral, because now I leave the hospital and go to the crematorium, it is cremated at 3:30 pm, tomorrow, in Braga, and I can’t even be inside, even, I have to wait on the street”, he laments .

Miguel is indignant with the successive declarations of responsible of the home since last Sunday, when O MINHO reported in first hand that there were several users with symptoms of Covid-19 inside the home, and that a user had been hospitalized for, which everything indicated (and now confirmed), to be infected with the virus.

“My grandmother was not a lorpa, she was a full professor, she was a general practitioner woman for 40 years, she understands medicine and she told me she was infected with Covid and the home sent me f *****, apologizing for expression. And now my grandmother died ”.

MINHO contacted the technical director of Asilo São José, who confirmed the death by Covid, but did not want to make statements at this time.

MINHO also confirmed with a credible hospital source that Hannelore is flagged as a deadly victim of Covid-19.
