City advocates “education for sustainable development”

Dortmund was the first city in Germany to sign a cooperation with the Competence Center Education – Sustainability – Municipality. She wants to raise awareness of “sustainable development”.

Dortmund is a model municipality for “Education for Sustainable Development”. In the coming years, the city wants to build a network to bring together existing initiatives and pool resources, the administration announced.

The city set this focus “in order to support sustainability in Dortmund and to enable children and young people in Dortmund’s educational landscape to acquire future-oriented skills”, said city councilor Daniela Schneckenburger.

The city administration, schools and daycare centers, but also extracurricular educational locations are involved. The aim is also to raise awareness of the topic and train interested parties. “With the agreement we have clear objectives and thus an orientation to promote sustainable development in Dortmund”, said Dr. Marco Schmidt, project manager of the ESD competence center in the north-west.
