“Citizens’ Signals Against Ivan Geshev’s Enemies Flood the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s Office”

A wave of citizens’ signals against the new enemies of the chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev at the top of the power has flooded the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s Office (SCP), which promised on Monday that it would pay due attention to them. The targets of this suddenly born civil activism are Boyko Borisov, Maria Gabriel, members of the Supreme Judicial Council who want the resignation of Geshev, former ministers.

On Monday, the VKP published a detailed report of the received reports, and they contain disturbing information about cases about which the public had no information until now.

He took the money and got on the plane

The most curious was a report filed by a citizen, which contained allegations that at the beginning of 2021, huge sums in Bulgarian levs were transferred across the country’s border by using the planes of the government’s “Air Squadron 28”. At that time, the third government of Boyko Borisov was in power.

The Bulgarian prosecutor’s office and services are traditionally suspected of holding compromising information against politicians. The appearance of this signal with a delay of two years and at a time when Borisov and Geshev are already enemies raises serious doubts about the motivation of its author.

In the last week, the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office has received signals that give grounds for starting an investigation of the members of the Prosecutor’s College, Kalina Chapkanova and Georgi Kuzmanov, who are demanding Geshev’s resignation.

The prosecutor’s office specifically notes the report against the former European Commissioner Maria Gabriel for the use of cheap municipal housing in Sofia for rent. The story with the apartment in Sofia, where Gabriel “stored” his luggage for BGN 400 monthly rent, dates back six years.

Mention is made of the report of the BOEC civil movement against Boyko Borisov, Miroslav Naydenov and other persons.

In view of the public importance of the cases, personal checks are carried out by prosecutors at the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s Office. Depending on the specifics of the cases and in accordance with the law, all necessary actions will be taken to clarify the statements made, including requesting information from KPCONPI, DANS, NARA, MIA, GDNP, GDBOP and other ministries and departments“, reports the prosecutor’s office.

In the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s Office, a personal check is also being carried out regarding the data presented by the chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev during the briefing on May 15 about trading in influence and political corruption by persons in high government positions. On Friday, Ivan Geshev gave explanations such as “aggregated and relevant materials for revealing the objective truth“.

Separately, it is reported that the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office is checking the report of the head of the investigation Borislav Sarafov against Ivan Geshev. The Attorney General has been on leave since Friday.

The chief prosecutor was regularly summoned to the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office on May 22 and his explanations were taken down“, reports the prosecutor’s office.

It’s not in logs

The prosecutor’s office also went wild on the subject of “Barcelonagate” – the investigation in which there are suspicions of money laundering and the name of GERB leader Boyko Borisov is mentioned. This investigation was sent into a coma with the explanation that translations were being made and reports from abroad were awaited.

However, suddenly it is back on the agenda. In a statement Monday, the prosecutor’s office said documents were still being translated. But he further stated:

The claims spread by the media that the “Barcelonagate” case is “a shambles” do not correspond to the factual situation and are intended to make the work of the prosecution more difficult, to frustrate the lawful development of the pre-trial proceedings and to serve illegitimate political interests“.

The case started even before the closing of the specialized prosecutor’s office. Then it was transferred to the city of Sofia. Last week, Geshev stated that it was under the supervision of a classmate of his. The same prosecutor was pressured to close the case “by Friday”.

This was the first time Geshev mentioned this investigation in such a context. Last Monday, again for the first time, he called the leader of GERB “the person Boyko Metodiev Borisov”.
