Churches start their fundraising campaigns | Currently Germany | DW

At the nationwide start of this year’s Adveniat Christmas campaign, the Würzburg bishop Franz Jung called for global justice, especially for the people in Latin America. “Because whoever destroys the Amazonia destroys the world,” he emphasized in a service in Hofheim in Lower Franconia. The people there are deprived of the land as a livelihood through expropriation or overexploitation. The rural population living there ultimately also ensures our survival, as the Amazon region is irreplaceable for the global climate, said Jung.

Children have the right to education

The nationwide start of the Adveniat campaign on the first Sunday of Advent had the motto “ÜberLeben im Land” and was celebrated for the first time decentrally with four church services in the diocese of Würzburg. On the first of Advent, the church aid organizations “Bread for the World” and Adveniat traditionally open their Christmas campaigns.

The 62nd Protestant fundraising campaign “Bread for the World” supports projects against worldwide child labor. In a church service for the nationwide opening of this year’s campaign in Speyer, the Palatinate Church President Christian Schad called on people to stand up for the right of children and young people to education. The motto of the campaign is “Giving children a future”. To this end, the aid organization collects collections and donations during Advent and Christmas for projects that protect children from exploitative child labor and enable them to attend school.

Still widespread worldwide: child labor

The living situation of children, who are hardest hit by the Corona crisis, urgently needs to be improved in poor countries, Schad said in his sermon. Giving them a future means first and foremost enabling them to go to school.

More than 150 million girls and boys worldwide suffered from child labor. They toiled in mines, textile factories and in agriculture. Jesus Christ set an example, “to take the little ones in the middle, the children at eye level”, said the church president.
