Church in Wipkingen becomes a classroom

Classrooms, parliament and concerts: Zurich makes better use of Reformed churches

The Wipkingen church in Zurich is to be used as a care room and library for the neighboring school. But first, the city is planning an installation for around eight million francs. And the church is contemplating further conversions.

The city of Zurich wants to rent the Wipkingen Reformed Church as a classroom for CHF 180,000 a year.

“We are entering new territory,” said the city of Zurich’s building manager André Odermatt (SP) on Wednesday before the media. For the first time in Zurich, a church will be used for school purposes. And not just adjoining church rooms, but the main building of the Reformed Church in Wipkingen, where services were held until 2019. From 2026 it will serve to relieve the neighboring Waidhalde school.
