Canada keeps its international borders closed until the end of September

Canada will extend until September 30 the closure of its international borders to foreigners, with the exception of certain Americans, in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the government announced on Friday.

“Canadian citizens and permanent residents returning to Canada will continue to be subject to quarantine measures,” said the Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair on Twitter.

As of last March, travelers arriving in Canada, whether Canadian or not, have been subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Foreign nationals who show symptoms of COVID-19 are prohibited from entering Canada.

Since the beginning of June, foreign nationals can join their families living in Canada, if they are spouses, children, parents or legal guardians of Canadian citizens.

For its part, Canada’s border with the United States remains closed until September 21, as part of a separate bilateral agreement with Washington. Only trade in goods and merchandise and travel considered essential are allowed.

This closure of the longest land border in the world was decided in March and has been renewed every month since.

As of Friday, Canada had more than 127,000 cases of coronavirus and nearly 9,140 deaths.
