Church – Freiburg im Breisgau – Archbishop Burger: Do not lose courage despite the – political crisis

Freiburg (dpa/lsw) – Catholic Archbishop Stephan Burger has urged people not to lose heart despite the current crisis. According to the manuscript of the speech, Burger said in his Sunday Christmas Day sermon that there is a central message of hope in the Christmas story. The “mystery of innocent love that only a newborn human child gives us” is the moment in which we can experience firsthand what it means to be a child of God, he said on Christmas day.

Burger went on to say that this insight offers a chance to reshape life. Brought into this love, it becomes possible to leave distrust and suspicion behind, put disturbing and painful experiences on the back burner. “It becomes possible to forgive those who owe us forgiveness. It becomes possible to ask for forgiveness from others.”

The Evangelical bishop of Württemberg, Ernst-Wilhelm Gohl, has invited the powerful of this world to reconsider their role. According to the manuscript of the speech previously distributed in the Stuttgart collegiate church, Gohl said: “Because then, as now, the powerful appear to us as those who own tanks or have assets worth hundreds of billions of dollars – or both.” Colossians does not require reversal. Simply classify the mighty downstairs. “Why? Because even rulers who seemingly carry out their acts of violence without hindrance will one day die. And the same goes for billionaires as it goes for all of us: the last shirt has no pockets.”
