It was basically foreseeable: Christopher Nolan will probably no longer produce his next films with Warner Bros., as it is now called.
It was an unprecedentedly successful and fruitful collaboration between master director Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. What started with “Batman Begins” (“Insomnia – Schlaflos”, if you add Warner’s role as a distributor), now ends at least for the time being Sci-Fi thriller “Tenet”, which was released in 2020 as a daring venture in the midst of the corona crisis. In between, Nolan and Warner Bros. created great works such as “Inception”, “Interstellar” and the underrated “Prestige – The Masters of Magic”.
A real Nolan insider tip: “Prestige – The Masters of Magic”. You can stream the film with Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale on Amazon
But now the British filmmaker and the traditional studio are going their separate ways, like The Wall Street Journal reported. The reason is primarily Warner’s plan to make all films in the USA available for one month via the in-house streaming service HBO Max in parallel with the cinema release in 2021. The studio celebrated this hybrid model as a win-win situation for cinema operators and the audience.
However, the creative minds behind the plants see it differently. Especially since they were apparently faced with a fait accompli. “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve accused the studio of having “destroyed” its planned trilogy before it even opened in theaters. Nolan also sharply criticized the studio shortly after the announcement. But the 50-year-old is now apparently following the criticism into action: After more than 15 years together and 8 films, Nolan takes his hat and leaves Warner’s lap.
Not only Christopher Nolan can direct good sci-fi films, these other films should also be seen by sci-fi fans:
