Christophe van der Maat becomes state secretary, Conny Helder minister

Provincial administrator Christophe van der Maat becomes State Secretary for Defense in the new Rutte IV cabinet. Van der Maat is still a member of the Provincial Executive in Brabant. Healthcare director Conny Helder from Den Bosch will be the new minister of Long-term Care and Sport.

Christophe van der Maat (41) is now being put forward by the VVD as State Secretary to the Defense post. Several sources from The Hague confirm this to the ANP. He thus becomes Barbara Visser’s successor.

Conny Helder will also join the cabinet on behalf of the VVD. The NOS reports that she will receive the portfolio Landurige Zorg en Sport.

The new cabinet will be presented on 10 January. In the run-up to that, more and more names and numbers are leaking out: who will get which position.

Mobility, Finance and Organization
It is the first time for Van der Maat that he will fulfill a political position in The Hague. Van der Maat is responsible for the Mobility, Finance and Organization portfolio in Brabant.

He is also the King’s first Deputy Commissioner.

Christophe van der Maat and Conny Helder are not the first people from Brabant to be announced as having a place in the new cabinet. Rob Jetten from Veghel will become Minister of Climate on behalf of D66. And Carola Schouten, originally from Den Bosch, is also participating again. She will become deputy prime minister on behalf of the ChristenUnie, RTL Nieuws reports. As a minister she is responsible for Poverty Policy, Participation and Pensions.
