A large tent in Halle, Gelderland, collapsed yesterday due to strong winds. A Christmas market had just been set up in the tent with items made by students from the Halle Village School.

Since this school year, students from all classes at the school have been working on the items, from tea light holders to Christmas baubles. Almost all of them have now been destroyed. The market was awaited with great anticipation, writes Omroep Gelderland.

Rick Wolsink

School director Rick Wolsink kept an eye on the weather reports all day due to storm Pia. “It looked stable and safe all morning and part of the afternoon, but around 5 p.m. it worsened,” Wolsink said.

At that moment he decided to cancel the Christmas market. Fifteen minutes later the tent collapsed. “It went crazy for a while, maximum 30 seconds, then it became manageable again.”

According to the director, the students are dismayed by the destruction. “And they had made such beautiful things. Really of Intratuin level. They were quite upset by it.”

As a consolation, all students were treated to a Christmas brunch this morning. During the meal a film made in the run-up to the market was shown.

Christmas spirit

Residents of the village helped clean up the damage, which provided a ray of hope, according to the director. “It is obvious that as a community you come together at fun moments. But in a situation like yesterday, Halle is also there. Always, everywhere. That is actually even more important than canceling the Christmas market.”
