Last Monday Fabio Misseroni and his son Christian were attacked and injured in Trentino by a bear not yet identified on Mount Peller, in the Val di Non President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, ordered the killing of the animal and the start of the reduction of specimens as required by the protection plan. Legambiente has decided to report Fugatti, while the Minister of the Environment, Sergio Costa, defined the culling of the bear as unacceptable at a time when the details are unknown, particularly if it was a female who wanted to protect the cubs. This caused the reaction of four Northern League deputies from Trentino: that of Costa is an interference, because it does not realize the effects that this animal can cause. On Twitter in defense of the bears also intervened Alessandro Gassmann: We have invaded every space of the bear, plundered, cemented, deforested, spilled, burned, and now you are killing one with offspring because you claim it is dangerous ?. And they are also opposed to killing Christian Misseroni and his father.

I’m still in shock, tired. Fear and tension are felt.

What do you think of the order to kill the bear that attacked you?
Both my father and I are opposed to killing, because we have respect for the mountains and the animals that live there, even if we are hunters. We live the mountain at 360 degrees, but in full respect. We certainly want to manage bears as cleanly as possible, but the problem must necessarily be addressed.

How?
Unfortunately in our area the population of bears saturated, compared to our territory: the plantigrades are moving more and more in the country, frequent sightings are repeated near the houses, something must be done.

How should institutions move to guarantee the rights of animals but also those of residents and tourists?
Unfortunately it is not within my competence to say how to manage them, whether to move the bears to other Alpine regions or to castrate them, so at least the number does not increase or more. Sooner or later, if nothing is done, the dead run away, because the bears are also stressed by the increasing presence of man in the mountains. Here Monte Peller an area frequented daily by many tourists and mushroom lovers of the mountain. Do we have to find intelligent solutions, or do we no longer have the right to go for a walk in the mountains?

You and your father saw death in the face …
I was 200 meters from the main road at 17 in the afternoon, dressed in bright colors, jeans and yellow boots, without a camera, nothing that incentivized an attack. A small path passed beneath me, we took it and the bear attacked us. I heard that we would do something wrong or frighten the animal. Nothing could be more wrong. We had left the path for about ten minutes. I was in front. And suddenly I saw the bear come on me, gritting my teeth. out of the undergrowth like a rocket, like a fury. Still, we were just walking. I am now terrified at the thought of going to the mountains to take a walk, this thing is not permissible.

Do you still oppose the killing?
I absolutely do not want to bring down the bears, but they must be managed, respecting their lives. Something must be done, my greatest passion for my father and me has been ruined because of this mishandling. Unfortunately for now a political issue, we can’t do much anymore.

What do you feel now?
Many animal rights activists are attacking me, accusing me of the future death of the bear … This destroys me, we cannot do anything. We love the mountains and animals.
