Chovanec case: “The context? Nothing justifies giving a Nazi salute… ”

The head of the Brussels-North police zone is very firm about the images of Charleroi.

Commissioner Frédéric Dauphin is head of the Brussels-North zone. He spoke in the columns of La Libre Belgique on the Chovanec affair which raised a debate on police violence in Belgium. “The debate has become too polarizing with, on the one hand, a ‘Brussels scum’ and, on the other, a ‘racist police’. These words have no place in a healthy and calm debate, certainly not if we want to move forward. I’d rather build bridges than erect walls.”

The commissioner is the head of one of the largest police zones in the capital (and the country). Fieldwork, he knows. The difficulties that go with it too. “I didn’t say we have a panacea, but within my division dialogue is at the center of everything. This allows a series of reflections on the field work in order to optimize our strengths.”

A discussion with “his men” which allows him to better manage complicated situations on the ground, such as management around the Maximilien Park. “One day, I sent one of my agents to the Humanitarian Hub, where teams from the Citizen’s Platform for Refugee Support and Médecins du Monde take care of migrants. At first, the inspector didn’t dare, but in the end, everything went well. This dialogue and this communication allow everyone a better lifestyle, it is also our goal..”
