Chitetsu Watanabe died at the age of 112. The Japanese, born in 1907, had only received a Guinness Book of Records certificate with his title as the oldest man in the world in his retirement home two weeks ago.

The Japanese, who came from the northern prefecture of Niigata, once said as a secret of his longevity that one should not be annoyed and always keep a smile on his face.

Daily sports and math exercises
Up until last summer, Watanabe had been doing sport and math exercises every day and devoting himself to origami folding and calligraphy. His motto: “Don’t get angry and smile.”

As the firstborn of eight children, Watanabe’s life was characterized by a lot of work and sometimes deprivation. He had attended an agricultural school, served the Japanese military in World War II, and then worked until retirement in the agricultural administration of his home in Niigata.

Until old age, he provided his family with private fruit and vegetable growing. According to the news agency Kyodo, five of their own children, twelve grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren now also included a first great-great-grandchild. On March 5, Watanabe would have been 113 years old. (SDA)
