Chinese Warship Reportedly Approaching Alaska

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

People’s Liberation Army (PLA) warship China reportedly entered international waters near Alaska, on Sunday (12/9) local time.

This information was obtained from the reports of websites affiliated with the Ministry of Defense United States of America, but this report was deleted on Monday (13/9).

Reportedly, these warships were used for long-sea training of the PLA’s naval defense fleet, said one Chinese analyst. This event can also be interpreted as China’s response to previous US military provocations on Chinese territory in the name of freedom of navigation.

Previously, four PLA ships also sailed in international waters of the US Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), namely in the area off the coast of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, on August 29 and 30.

The US Department of Defense said the force consists of cruiser missile ships, missile destroyers, general intelligence ships, and auxiliary ships, according to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) website, reported by the Global Times.

Although the DVIDS report did not name the four PLA ships, military observers assessed that the ships sailing near Alaska may have come from the same fleet sailing eastward. The ships sailed through the Soya Strait to the Pacific Ocean, on August 24. This conclusion was obtained considering the compatibility of the time and location of the two teams.

The DVIDS report also said PLA warships in Alaska had also met with US Coast Guard ships Bertholf and Kimball. The report notes that their interactions are both professional and secure.

This DVIDS report was then no longer accessible for unknown reasons on Monday.

Meanwhile, China has not commented on this incident.
