Chinese-made stand-alone trains enter service in Istanbul Metro – 2024-03-05 07:58:19

/ world today news/ A new metro line connecting the center of Istanbul and the city’s new international airport was officially opened on Sunday. One of the signature innovations offered by the line are Chinese-made self-contained automated driverless metro trains that can travel at up to 120 kilometers per hour.

“This metro line has a capacity of 800,000 passengers a day. It will allow travel from Kagitane Station to Istanbul Airport in 24 minutes,” Turkish President Recep Erdogan said during the opening ceremony.

The fully automated driverless trains were built by the Chinese company CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd. It signed a contract for the purchase and commissioning of 176 metro cars with Turkey’s General Directorate of Infrastructure Investments back in January 2020, with a large number actually being manufactured at the company’s factory in Ankara, Turkey.

Over the past decade, China’s CRRC ZELC has delivered more than 400 vehicles to Turkey, which are already in service in the country’s three largest cities – Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.
