Chinese Expert Calls Taiwan’s Idea to Make Nuclear Bombs Ridiculous and Dangerous

BEIJING – The experts China think ideas about Taiwan develop nuclear weapons is a ridiculous and dangerous idea. According to them, if the idea is implemented, it will not only be Beijing that will act hard but the United States (US) as well.

They stressed that Beijing must prepare for the worst, suggesting placing the island’s nuclear weapons development as one of China’s red lines on the Taiwan question. Because, once the island has nuclear weapons, the costs for national reunification will be incalculable.

An article published by Foreign Affairs last week asked experts whether more countries would develop nuclear weapons. Some experts say that the island of Taiwan may be on the list of potential nuclear weapons developments in the next 10 years.

For example, Caitlin Talmadge, an Associate Professor of Security Studies at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, said pressure for South Korea, Japan and the island of Taiwan to seek nuclear weapons will grow.

However, he does not believe that the Chinese government will let the island get a nuclear bomb.

William Alberque, director of Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Policy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, also considers Iran, Saudi Arabia, the island of Taiwan, South Korea and Japan to be “dark horses”.

These statements were recently picked up by some powers on the island to launch another round of hype, prompting Chiu Kuo-cheng, the leader of the island’s defense authority, to refute them. “The military in Taiwan does not manufacture, develop and acquire nuclear-related technology,” he said.

Responding to the island’s politicians, Chiu said he did not know where the information came from and the military had never discussed or planned to develop nuclear weapons.
