China Sets Record Daily Corona Cases in the Last 2 Years

China reported 3,393 new daily cases of Covid-19. The National Health Commission said the figure had more than doubled the previous day and was the worst on record in two years.

The spike in Covid-19 cases nationwide prompted the Chinese government to close schools in Shanghai and impose a lockdown on several cities in the northeast, with nearly 19 provinces battling local outbreaks of the Omicron and Delta variants.

Local officials said the city of Jilin was still under a partial lockdown. Hundreds of settlements had to be closed to prevent the spread of the Corona virus.

It is known that Jilin residents have carried out 6 rounds of mass Corona tests so far. As of Sunday, the city reported more than 500 cases of the Omicron variant.

Meanwhile, the neighboring city of Changchun also imposed a similar lockdown. Lockdown has been in effect since last Friday (11/3).

“(The outbreak) reflects that the spread of the hidden Omicron variant, is highly contagious, fast and difficult to detect at an early stage,” Jilin provincial health official Zhang Yan said at a press conference Sunday.

“This also reflects the rapid improvement of the virus situation in each region and the lack of capacity to expand medical resources, resulting in limited reception and centralized care in a short period of time.” he added.

The spike in Corona cases in these areas prompted the mayor of Jilin and the head of the Changchun Health Commission to be dismissed on Saturday (12/3).
