BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) – In recent years, by promoting sustainable management of forest resources, China actively participates in global forest governance and brings wisdom to the achievement of the goals of the United Nations Strategic Plan on Forests (2017-2030).

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, 100 million mus of trees have been planted each year as part of a large-scale national reforestation campaign, helping China to become the country with the most forest resources. believed in the world.

According to Peng Youdong, deputy director of the State Administration of Forests and Grasslands (AEFP), the country’s forest area is 220 million hectares, the timber stock is 17.56 billion cubic meters, and the amount of carbon in biomass is 9.186 billion tons.

With a forest cover rate of 23.04% (compared to 12% in the 1980s), China has the largest artificial forest area in the world.

During the same period, the afforestation rate of urbanized areas increased from 10.1% to 41.11%. The area of park afforestation per urban inhabitant increased from 3.45 square meters to 14.8 square meters.

In 2017, the Saihanba afforestation community in northern China won the United Nations Champions of the Earth award for its outstanding contribution to restoring the degraded environment.

Saihanba has become an important ecological shield for Beijing and Tianjin and is of utmost importance for the water and air quality of the Beijing-Tianjin region.

Not only has China achieved remarkable achievements in the fight against deforestation, it also guides its people in using forest resources to lift themselves out of poverty.

Peixie, a village in Fujian province (southeast) where the forest cover rate is 83.7%, a rural tourism cooperative has been set up. With collective and private investments, projects such as aquatic activities, hiking in the forest and crossing glass bridges are attracting a growing number of tourists.

Yinghua Township in southwest Sichuan Province has invested one million yuan in forestry, and more than one hundred local families have seen their income increase.

Since the launch of the 13th five-year plan (2016-2020), around six billion visits have been made to forestry, making it a pillar of the forest and grassland sector.

In order to keep its promise in terms of sustainable forest management, since 2012 China has selected twelve pilot establishments to set up the United Nations Forest Instrument. The areas concerned include forestry culture, nature education, silvotherapy, construction of national parks and integrated forestry development in urban and rural areas.

Today, the number of pilot establishments stands at fifteen. By 2030, China aims to increase the wood stock by 6 billion cubic meters compared to 2005.
