China has a plan to lead the “robot revolution”

China has unveiled its new plan for “intelligent robot production”, according to world media. The country intends to digitize robotic operations in local production by 70% by 2025.

As part of an initiative jointly announced by several government agencies, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, it aims to achieve a minimum annual growth rate of 20% in robotics sales.

Beijing also wants to create a so-called “group of industry champions” to double the “robot density” in the country.

According to a report by the International Robotics Federation, measured in units per 10,000 employees, China ranks ninth in robot density in 2020, up from 25th five years earlier.

Last year, the density was 246 per 10,000 employees, which means it lags behind South Korea, which has a density of 932 and ranks first since 2010. However, the global level of China is well above average.

The new plan comes at a time when Beijing is trying to upgrade its economy amid deepening technological rivalries with the United States, citing an “increasingly complex” global environment and “increasingly intense” competition.

A separate plan for the robotics industry says that China’s overall robotics capabilities will be among the best in the world by 2035, when robots will become an important part of the country’s economic development, daily life and social governance.
