China Faces Record-Breaking Cold Wave Causing Heating Problems in Cities

Dec 25, 2023 at 10:38 AM Update: 35 minutes ago

China is still experiencing above-average severe frost. The cold in the capital Beijing is breaking all kinds of records. It is also extremely cold in other Chinese cities, which causes heating problems.

On Christmas Day, temperatures in Beijing rose above freezing for the first time since December 11. The streak of subzero temperatures lasted more than three hundred hours, a record for the city.

In the past two weeks, temperatures in Beijing and the immediate area often dropped to 10 degrees below zero. This happened nine days in a row, which has never happened before.

The Beijing weather station therefore speaks of the coldest winter since China started keeping weather statistics in 1951.

Beijing is experiencing a year of extremes in terms of weather. Last summer, the Chinese capital experienced its hottest June day ever. It then became more than 40 degrees.

Cold keeps China in its grip

Other Chinese cities are also suffering from extreme cold. In many places the heating system can no longer cope with the conditions.

Heaters have already failed several times in the eastern province of Henan. In the city of Jiaozuo, energy suppliers could no longer meet the demand, causing heat pumps to fail.

There are also heating problems in the cities of Puyang and Pingdingshan. The local city authorities have decided that government buildings will no longer have heating. This means that all energy is available for heating homes.

In the northeastern province of Heilongjiang it was about 48 degrees below zero earlier this month. Other parts in the north and northeast of the country also saw the mercury drop to 40 degrees below zero in recent days.

It is expected to become less cold in China in the coming days. The wind shifts and therefore no longer blows cold air from the Arctic over the land.
