TIANJIN, KOMPAS.com – China on Friday (29/1/2021) executed a former banker Lai Xiaomin who were accused of accepting a bribe of 260 million US dollars (Rp. 3.6 trillion).
The news was broadcast on Chinese state television CCTV quoted by the news agency AFP.
Lai Xiaomin, who was the former chairman of Huaron, one of China’s largest asset management companies, was sentenced to death by a Tianjin city court, reports CCTV.

“The number of bribes that Lai Xiaomin received was enormous, the crimes were severe, and the social impact was enormous,” he said CCTV citing a statement by China’s Supreme Court.
The report did not specify how Lai was executed, but said he was allowed to meet his close relatives before he died.
The death penalty rate in Chinese courts is as high as 99 percent, it is very rare for executions to be canceled.
However, the number of executions carried out each year is not disclosed in “Panda Country”.

Rights group Amnesty International estimates China has a top position in the number of death sentences, with thousands of executions and death sentences each year.
Lai Xiaomin was found guilty and sentenced to death earlier this month.
The Tianjin court said Lai was abusing his position to raise a large amount of money.
He was also found guilty of committing bigamy, namely living with women out of wedlock as husband and wife, and fathering illegitimate children.

Lai is also suspected of embezzling more than 25 million yuan (Rp. 54.5 billion) in public funds during 2009-2018.
His action was exposed in April 2018, and investigators fired him from his job and removed his position in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Several high-ranking CCP officials and businessmen have been arrested in recent years as part of an anti-corruption operation by President Xi Jinping.
