China denies being at the origin of the epidemic

THE ESSENTIAL

  • China claims the coronavirus was on frozen goods imported from overseas that passed through the port of Wuhan.
  • She also reports that traces of Covid-19 were discovered around the world long before the first official case was discovered in China.

This is the question everyone is asking. The Covid-19 pandemic officially started in China, in Hubei province, on 1is December 2019. If for the moment, everything suggests that the virus is coming from China, which creates a stir at the diplomatic level, the Beijing government claims to be in no way responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic. And advances the thesis of a virus coming from abroad.

Frozen products contaminated by Covid-19

According to the theory supported by relatives of the Chinese Communist Party, that the Chinese newspaper Global Times was able to interview, the Covid-19 epidemic would have started in Wuhan because frozen products imported from abroad were found there, including meat from Australia, seafood from Ecuador or cherries from Chile.

On condition of anonymity, an expert told the Chinese newspaper that “it is possible that the coronavirus, from other countries, caused the first outbreak in Wuhan, but we lack evidence”. Indeed, traces of the coronavirus prior to the first contamination of December 1, 2019, have already been found in different places on the planet. In a recent study, researchers mentioned traces of antibodies to Covid-19 in Italians in September 2019. In another case, it was sportsmen who participated at the Military Games in Wuhan in October 2019 who showed symptoms of the coronavirus on their return to France, well before the first official Chinese case.

Beijing seeks to exonerate itself

However, if the track evoked by Beijing of frozen food contaminated by Covid-19 remains to be explored, the scientific community is skeptical of indirect contamination by packaging. According to experts interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Beijing’s efforts to offer new explanations of the origin of the pandemic would be due to international but also national pressure to which China is subjected on this issue.

According to Yanzhng Huang, a former member of health at the Council on Strange Relations in New York, China itself is “looking for evidence that can exonerate the country”. For now, a United Nations investigation is still underway to determine the origins of the coronavirus pandemic. China is to welcome ten international experts so that they can conduct their investigations in Wuhan. However, no date has yet been set by Beijing to receive them.
