China collects data from foreigners on social media on a large scale

From research by The Washington Post It appears that information from Facebook, Twitter and other Western social media is used by Chinese government agencies such as the military and police.

It was already known that residents of China are closely monitored online. However, the American newspaper has now obtained more than 300 contracts signed by the Chinese authorities since the beginning of last year. This shows that the systems are also used to track foreigners.

Among other things, a list is kept of foreign journalists and scientists who post about Hong Kong and Taiwan. A police intelligence program also analyzes Western rumors about Hong Kong and Taiwan.

It also keeps track of where else in the world is communicated in Uyghur. That language is spoken by the Uyghurs, a population group that is oppressed in the Xinjiang region of China.

Some of the IT projects, according to the newspaper, cost hundreds of thousands of euros and are staffed 24 hours a day by English-speaking experts.
