China also wants to bring its own vaccines to Europe

Three Chinese vaccines against the coronavirus are said to have largely passed the clinical test procedures. According to the manufacturer, the effectiveness is surprisingly high. However, experts enjoy the numbers with caution. However, approval is also possible in Europe.

Suitable vaccines against the coronavirus have been searched for months at high pressure. The World health organization (WHO) currently lists 236 projects that are researching a vaccine. The first promising vaccines went through the necessary test phases in autumn 2020. Three of these vaccines are now approved in the EU: BioNTech / Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca. All are considered safe and reliable. Now three Chinese Covid-19 vaccines have also passed the tests in different countries. In some countries, two of them are already in use. However, it is not yet entirely clear how effective they are.

Overview – What is known about the three vaccines?

Vero

The state-owned pharmaceutical company Sinopharm from China developed the corona vaccine “Vero”. According to the company, the vaccine had been tested on 60,000 people in 125 countries by the end of the third test phase. There are now around 10 million “Vero” vaccinated people in China. On the US online platform clinicaltrials.gov, which lists scientific studies worldwide, there is still no reliable data. The vaccine is according to one Sinopharm press release effective from January 2, 2021 to 86 percent.

WHO experts are currently taking a closer look at the information about “Vero”. If the numbers are correct, the WHO could approve the vaccine at the end of March 2021. Serbia has been the first European country to use the vaccine since January 19, 2021.

Coronavac

In the phase 3 study, the “Coronavac” vaccine from the Chinese manufacturer Sinovac Life Science delivered varying results. Tests for the effectiveness of the vaccine were carried out in Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey and Chile. In November 2020, the Brazilian Medicines Agency Anvisa temporarily suspended the studies on “Coronavac” after incidents. The vaccine has now been approved in Brazil and Indonesia since mid-January 2021. The WHO is currently examining the documents submitted by Sinovac about the vaccine. A decision by the experts could be made in spring 2021.

Invite

The third Chinese corona vaccine with the somewhat cumbersome name “Ad5-Ncov” is still in clinical development. It now bears the trade name “Convidecia”. The Chinese manufacturer CanSino Biologics published the first figures on the effectiveness of the vaccine in May 2020 study. According to this, an increase in antibodies can be detected after two weeks. In the summer of 2020, various level 3 studies started in Russia, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. In Canada, according to the Deutsche Welle however, test studies have been stopped. The background could be diplomatic entanglements.
