Children’s Routine Immunization is More Important than the COVID-19 Vaccine

VIVA – In the midst of a pandemic, all attention is focused on how to deal with COVID-19. But, many then forget that there is a threat of other disease outbreaks that can be prevented by doing so immunization.

During the pandemic, the General Chairperson of the IDAI Central Executive dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, SpA(K) revealed that immunization coverage has decreased.

Several Extraordinary Events (KLB) were also recorded by the Ministry of Health in the midst of a pandemic. The head of the IDAI Infection & Tropical Disease UKK, Anggraini Alam said, there are 13 diseases that can be prevented by vaccine. Coupled with COVID-19, it becomes 14 diseases.

“Complete routine immunizations are important because if there is a decrease in immunization coverage, the pandemic will be more dangerous, the decline will cause various diseases. Imagine 13 diseases becoming epidemics during the COVID-19 period,” he said in an IDAI webinar themed ‘Multisectoral Support for Pursuing Immunization’, Monday 29 November 2021.

The thirteen diseases include: measles, chickenpox, pertussis, rubella, diphtheria, polio, and others.

In 2020, continued Anggraini, various global events for polio infection circulated. “If you don’t defend yourself, it’s very easy for polio to come back again,” he added.
