What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. The condition usually manifests itself in jaundice, a yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin. Nausea and abdominal pain also occur. Mild hepatitis after a viral infection in children is normal. The inflammation usually goes away on its own.
It is usually caused by a virus. There are different forms named after the virus variant that causes it (A, B, C, D and E). “Hepatitis can also occur due to environmental factors or the wrong medication,” says Professor Hans Van Vlierberghe, head of department for stomach, intestinal and liver diseases at UZ Gent.
